Glacial Knob - K7
August 1st, 2008
Report Summary
We decided on a lighter hike for this morning after our long day in Wild Basin yesterday. The highlight of the morning was the West Glacial Knob. We started from the Glacier Gorge TH and took the fire trail to the Mills-Loch Vale junction. From there, we headed towards the Loch. Along the way we wanted to check out the log crossing usually used to reach the s-gully up Thatchtop. Now that we'd been to the s-gully, it stuck out like a sore thumb on Thatchtop's north face as we hiked to the Loch.
We took a short break at the Loch and then returned down the trail to find a spot to climb the West Knob. We tried to find the route described in Foster's book. We didn't find it and ended up choosing our own path. It was a little steep, but it didn't take long to reach the summit. The summit was wide open and offered great views in all directions, including a nice view of the route through s-gully.
After pictures and snacks, we headed down to the Loch Vale trail. On the way back, we stopped to check out the log crossing. Sandy and Ali were planning to use it tomorrow when climbing Thatchtop. The log is wide, but it's in two pieces. Sandy was able to cross, slipping, but not falling on the second half. Satisfied with our findings, we continued back to the TH using the fire trail again to save time. A short but enjoyable day in the park.
